Why We Should Pick Up Any Litter We See Lying Around

It was a wonderful bright sunny day here in Pozo, perfect for a late evening walk with our dog.

Days like this makes me remember the trust we should have in the power of nature. But the closer we observe the nature, the more we notice that the rhythm of the nature is not the same and no longer intact than it should be.

That’s why it frighten me so much and it definitely make me really sad to see all the litter lying in the nature. In my opinion litter is one of the biggest problem we have in environmental pollution.

Litter is what we call trash when it ends up outside a bin or landfill. It’s so bad for animals and people. Plastic waste suffocates, disables and kills thousands of animals each year. That animals we really need that humanity can continue to exist on Earth.

Turtles, seals, birds, dolphins and whales often mistake plastic waste for food. Plastic bags floating in the water can look like jellyfish, for example. After animals eat plastic, their intestines get blocked and their normal food can’t be digested properly. If they eat too much plastic, their stomachs always feel full, so they don’t eat anything else. Eventually they can starve to death. Plastic also contains lots of nasty chemicals that can poison animals and cause internal injuries. The chemicals in the plastic eaten by fish and other animals are passed up the food chain to other creatures, and even to humans. Especially micro-plastic which nowadays is accounted a considerable amount in our oceans. And not only in the sea but also on land, the plastic waste is degraded very slowly. Over the years, it decomposes into tiny particles which is the called micro-plastic.

Litter can consist of chewing gum thrown away in the pedestrian zone, packaging thrown away out of the car or empty plastic bottles leaving after a party at the beach. All these are subject to mechanical decomposition over time (sun, rain, etc.) and, if not removed, can generate micro-plastics, which in my eyes is the worst.

Please treat the world like your own home and don’t litter. You wouldn't through a plastic bottle under your carpet and leave it there. The world belongs to all of us. It has been left in our hands to take care of it.

SO WHAT CAN WE DO TO HELP?

1.) Put your litter always in the bin. If there is no bin, hold on to it until you find one.
2.) Say NO to plastic bags, bottles, straws and spoons in shops. Carry a cloth bag and reusable bottle with you to use instead.
3. And the most important: Become a TRASH HERO and pick up any litter you see lying around.

I do it too! When I go for a walk with my dog I usually try to pick up litter. Sometimes a take a bag with me or when I forgot to take a bag I pick up any bag who is laying in the nature ans I fill it with plastic bottles and “take away coffee cup”.

If you're not already doing it, you really should do it, at least for our kids. Because do you think our kids would like to have a hand-me-down earth? It doesn't hurt, and it helps us to save our planet.

Because we don’t have a Planet B!!!

In this sense…

Have lovely Sunday evening!
