El Hierro - How We Have Spend Our Last Day On That Beautiful Island

It's been a long time since I published my last blog post. But I wasn't in the mood to write something. As you may know, our beloved dog Nica died 6 weeks ago because of cancer. We were very sad and we still have to recover from the tragedy. But we are already a little better.

Right now we are in Germany. Last Saturday we went with the ferry from Gran Canaria to Cadiz to travel with “Lenny The Overlander” around Europe. We always have dreamed to make a longer Europe trip with Lenny, that’s why we have thought that this is the right time to help us to get through these hard times. We drove over Spain, France, Belgium and Netherland to Germany. Here in Germany we have met up with family and we will visit some friends, which we really looking forward to. Besides we will upgrade Lenny from the inside. With a lot of help from Dani's brother “Die Bootsmaufraktur”, we would like to build something practical but beautiful, which helps us to hit the road for longer periods of time. When the conversion is finished we gonna go back to Spain to discover Galicia, which is the north of Spain, for a few weeks.

We are looking forward to catch some waves, doing some hiking and having some special moments in that unique and marvelous place. For sure that I will share some of that moments with you.

But now I would like to share with you the last day on El Heirro.

Because I promised you this blog post a long time ago. Please excuse me for not being in touch with you for such a long period.

The last day was also our departure day, so we got up very early to have a little bit more from the day.

I climbed down again to the small but dreamlike bay to take a morning bath.

The water was so calm and clear, just perfect for snorkeling, if you have thought of the snorkel set, which I had, of course, forgotten it back up at Lenny.

Daniell stayed up to be with Nica and to fly a little bit with the drone. He captured so many awesome pics from above, that I have to say honestly this pic of me, became my fav one.

Last year we were still able to travel with Nica. She was with us a few times on smaller and bigger weekend trips to the other Canary Islands. She was really well and we enjoyed it together very much. Always happy to be on our side, we always had the feeling that these little trips were like a rejuvenating cure for her. Since she always frolicked and jumped around happily.

After the swim I climbed back up to the campsite and we had breakfast one last time with this beautiful view. Then we cleaned up and packed everything to head back up to the high plateau to drive through an area which we hadn’t visited before. We have heard from a friend that this area looks almost like Ireland. First we coudnt’t believe it but I can only confirm it. With the green meadows, the free-roaming cows and the small stone walls as fences, it really reminds on Ireland. Especially since it was also quite foggy.

When we came down again on the other side of the island we were almost next to the port, where the ferry was already waiting for departure.

Since we needed again a whole day to come back to Gran Canaria, the ferry ran out against 1:00 pm. We had the same way back over Tenerife, that’s why we arrived Gran Canaria in the late evening at 10:00 pm.

In the end we can say it was a very special trip. But overall we would have liked to stay a few days longer because of the long travel time. These 3 days were definitely much too short. But when our Lenny is finally upgraded with electricity and drawers, we will certainly come again to El Hierro to stay a little longer. Because although the island is small, there are so many beautiful corners to discover.

We are already looking forward to the next time. But now it's time to discover the European mainland, which is our first long trip for 6-7 weeks, so keep your fingers crossed that Lenny will bring us everywhere without big troubles.

Hasta Luego,

Katy
