Christmas Eve Overland Trip To The North Shore Of Fuerteventura
It's been a while, but still I don’t want you to miss these beautiful photos.
Last year we have spent Christmas Eve just different because it was the first time we celebrated it outdoor. We started our Christmas Eve Overland Trip just one day before Christmas eve on 23 of December.
It was the best and most stress-free Christmas ever. Not only to be far away from all this Christmas commerce but also for the stunning sunsets we had every evening. Sunsets are better than every Christmas present!
It took us more than half a day to arrive at the north shore. Two and a half hour the ferry needed from Gran Canara to Morojable the south of Fuerteventura. Afterwards we hit the road to the north shore for another 2 hours. Almost there we first stopped at the little village Lajares, where we always buy the most delicious bread and brownies in the French Bakery “El Goloso” obligatory.
From Lajares we got to El Cotillo and from there on we drove a gravel road along the coast for 15 minutes.
When we arrived at the late evening, we were lucky to have found a good pitch directly at the shore, exactly at the north west coast of Fuerteventura with an amazing view to the lighthouse El Toston, which is located at the Punta Ballena near the small town El Cotillo.
First of all we just placed ourselves in the sand to take a deep breath and let this view of the wild sea affect us to come down. A big swell hit the canary islands that weekend. Therefore we were fascinated by this natural spectacle as the waves crashed the shore and left a misty spray, while the sun slowly got down and created a lovely light.
Combined with the light of the setting sun we had an unforgettable beginning of our Christmas Eve Overland Trip. Lotta our little Pittbull puppy was the first time with us on a longer trip to another Island. Thus, she was pretty excited. But it was nice to see that she have trusted us and has gone along with everything bravely. She was very interested in the rocks along the shore, which were full of crabs, and she spent the whole evening exploring those rocks without catching a crab. At the end she was so tired that she lay down on her own but not without watching every single step of us.
When it started to get dark we lightened up a campfire in our fire bowl to grill a camembert which is placed in a bread loaf to dip in with the inside of the bread, what I had to remove to be able to put in de Camembert. Together with a jar of pickled olives, crapes and a cold white wine. It was just perfect.
Next day on Christmas eve we had fresh grilled sea bass with salad and baked potatoes. It was so simple but one of the best christmas eve dinners we had. I think it was the whole bundle, beautiful weather, being in nature at an incredible spot, with another awesome sunset and having no obligations.
This is exactly what we need, to ground ourselves and being in a perfected balanced state of mind to recharge our batteries. Overlanding is just perfect for that. You are only connected to the most essential things in life. Everything else can be completely faded out once. I wouldn't want to miss this kind of travel anymore.
Right now we are waiting longingly that our Lenny get through the annual technical inspection to hit the road again. Next Wednesday we finally have the appointment for the technical inspection and a special approval of our new heavy duty bumper and the winch, which we have installed recently.
So please, fingers crossed, that we can get our Lenny back on the road soon.
After a wonderful Christmas Eve we wanted to head south again to spend one day and the last night at the beach of Cofete, which is our absolutely favorite beach.
People say that this beach has already been named as the most beautiful beach in Europa, what we can confirm defiantly. That is why we always love to return to that beach and it isn’t far away from the port where the ferry goes back to Gran Canaria. So on our departure day we spent the maximum possible in Cofete, which has been also a very pleasant ending of our Christmas eve overland trip. We were allowed to spend almost another day and a half before we started to get back. In was again a wonderful and special time.
But you will certainly find that out in my next post. So stay tuned.
And loads of love,
Katy
