Our Last Overlander Trip To The South-West Coast Of Fuerteventura

More than never we would like to hit the road again to be able to enjoy the freedom, which comes with overlanding and this is one of the reasons why we have chosen this way of travelling.

I was just downloading the photos from our last overlander trip to the south-west coast of Fuerteventura and meanwhile I have realized how big my desire is to travel that way again to discover places like this. This trip was our last overlanding trip in October 2019 and our most beautiful. We had such a relaxing and recovering time, with some activities like a good surf, nice walks on the beach, funny swim sessions and campfires.

Even the sleep in our roof tent, which was for the first times quite challenging, was restful and nice this time. Although we didn’t have a full equipped kitchen and no hot water shower, we truly couldn't complain and we had such a good and unforgettable time.

After a nice talk with friends and as I wrote some days ago in my daily “quote of the day” on Instagram, “the current situation (lockdown) brings us to re-evaluate what we really want”, Dani and me came to the conclusion that all the material stuff, like the newest Thermomix, the best TV or the biggest car, will never make us truly happy. But these journeys and moments we were able to experience will stay in our hearts forever and the possibility to remind us of all that wonderful moments makes us happy. So we gonna try not to pay so much attention to material things, but instead we gonna try to experience more of these moments. Our next plan is to travel every 7 Canary Islands and hopefully we discover many places like the one you see on the pics.

As soon as we can travel to the other islands we gonna share our experiences in order of how and where you can practice overlanding here on the Canary Islands. Since it ‘s not official permitted, but in many places tolerated, which no-one knows it exactly, we gonna make it to our Mission to report you frequently about an appropriate and suitable over-lander route, where you can discover the prettiest places on the Canary Islands. But only under the condition that we gonna be gentle with the earth, kind to the people and only leave footprints.

This secret spot is one of the most beautiful beaches I’ve ever saw. It’s located at the south-west coast of Fuerteventura called “Playa de Cofete”. We took the Ferry of Fred Olson from Las Palmas (Gran Canaria) to Moro Jable (Fuerteventura), which take 2 hours. Luckily, the drive from Moro Jable to Cofete didn’t take so long, as Moro Jable is also located in the south. After driving 45 minutes gravel road and passing a lot of goats we arrived in the late afternoon Cofete. As it’s such a big beach we needed some time to find our place to stay.

When you arrive Cofete beach you will come across a sandy and gravel parking lot where some campers already have taken their place . If you prefer to stand alone, you can cross this parking lot and continue driving along the increasingly sandy path until you find a suitable spot. Keep attention and drive slow because you will pass some larger potholes and you could get stuck in loose sand of the road. But if you have a 4x4 you wont have any problems with this issue. When you have the feeling you can also drive a little bit off the road into the area to find a sheltered spot. But be carful with the goats and don’t destroy any plants. You will not find many campers here. We were almost alone except a VW van which arrived later and parked about 500m far from us.

When we found our place we first set everything up, enjoyed a little bit of the evening sun and had a sundowner walk on the beach with our dog “Nica”. She was so happy that she found herself on a beach, because she knows that from this moment on we will take off her dog collar and leash and she can walk around freely, which she enjoys as much as we do, and only when we leave again, we put her gear on.

We were blessed with a magical sunset, which we enjoyed extensively. Later we cooked one-pot-pasta at our  provisional kitchen at Lenny’s trunk with headlamps and Dani lit a campfire, so that we could sit after dinner at the fire with a glass of wine to read a book and to let the day fade out slowly. Nica felt comfortable and was sleeping deep, because she was pretty tired from the travel. We where also tired but we kept talking under the starry sky, because it was just too beautiful to end this moment so abruptly.

Exactly these wonderful moments we are sorely missed and we hope that our new normality will enable us to enjoy them again soon, knowing that this cannot be taken for granted.

As we were getting more and more tired and our eyes started to close frequently, we went upstairs in our roof tent. We have accommodated Nica with her bed inside the Lenny and the connection between roof tent and car interior by the open roof window of Lenny we could notice if something happened with Nica. So we could fall asleep confidently.

Always when we woke up in the morning the first thing we do is to open all the tent sides, take a deep breath and watch the ocean from bed. It’s the best way to start the day.

Then we went straight to the shore and jumped into the ocean. It was so refreshing and it picked us up. We felt so fresh, free and happy, that we could stay in there for hours. As well as our coffee thirst and craving for an extensive breakfast made us come out of the water to prepare first of all a coffee.

During breakfast we saw that the waves were getting bigger and bigger, so Dani went directly into the water with our wooden longboard. Nica was always on our side during all our activities and if not she just laid on her pillow in the shadows and watched us from a distance. She did a good job!

The nice thing is, we could just do what we want, we had no duties on those days. The only thing was to put breakfast back in our cooler and wash the dishes. Actually except for putting the food into the cooler we left everything to do it later and we just did what we wanted to do. Dani went into the water to catch some waves and me sunbathing and reading my book on the beach next to the shore. Afterwards I tried out the new longboard as well and had some fun in the water.

So the day basically went by pretty fast and in the evening we went with Nica for a walk on the beach. These days are like the quote said: SURF, EAT, SLEEP, REPEAT...

That' s why the second day went the same way, what we absolutely needed to unwind our minds. We really love this kind of lifestyle, therefore it was difficult for us to break off our tent, when we have to leave. But we left this place extremely recovered and happy. Only our footprints testify our stay.

So we hope that we can come back as soon as traveling between the islands is allowed. Probably it will be possible again around June.

We are really looking forward to it!

Love,

Katy!
